SUMMER IS UPON US and with summer come some special concerns for our pets. There are many summer items that are poisonous to our pets, such as some gardening products such as bone and blood meal, rose and plant fertilizers, pesticides and insecticides.

Salt water can be poisonous to dogs if they drink too much it can cause hypernatremia ( an elevated sodium level). To help prevent this when taking your dog to the beach, be sure to carry fresh water and an Frisbee, works perfectly as a water dish.

Pool Chemicals can cause corrosive injury when ingested in an undiluted form Do not leave open containers where curious pets can get into them.

Some common picnic items are also dangerous to our pets. Xylitol the natural sugar substitute is dangerous to dogs. It can cause a severe drop in blood sugar and potential liver damage.

Alcohol in any form can cause low blood sugar, low body temperature and severe coma or seizures.

Some pet safe people foods are: Carrots, peas, green beans, apple slices and ice chips.
